Understanding Servers

The term server can take on specific connotations depending on how it is used. If used as a single term, it refers to a computer device that runs a server operating system. If used in computing, server can mean both software and hardware that can offer certain services to clients.
The popular usage of server is in the field of information technology. In IT, server refers to an automated task which allows certain data to be shared with clients. It goes to say that any device or tool that enables data to be shared with clients is called a server. Even devices such as laptop or personal computer can be called servers if it delivers a function like that of a server. Any hardware tools that aid software in sharing data is also called server.
The use of severs became common during the last decade of 20th century. At this point, the most advanced servers are contained in the products of the most reputable operating system developers such as Microsoft. The internet is also a home of countless servers.
